Yoga and Caregiving

You don’t have to look far these days to find supporting scientific evidence about the health benefits of yoga and meditation practices. These ancient practices dating back thousands of years continue to demonstrate their health promoting benefits when applied and practiced in our modern-day lives.

Specific styles of yoga and mindful movement practices can help to reduce physiological and mental stress by calming the nervous system. This makes it an ideal tool for some caregivers of those with dementia, who are experiencing persistently elevated levels of stress due to the challenges are being a care partner. Yoga practices can be modified for older adults experiencing changes with their memory or mobility.

After years of experiencing the beneficial effects of coordinated breath and movement practices as experienced in yoga, Tamasin completed a 200-Hour Yoga Teacher Training for healthcare providers with the goal of deepening her own practice and subsequently sharing these beneficial tools of health promotion with her patients. Further study has included exploration of Pranayama (breath practices), Meditation techniques, Adaptive yoga, Yoga for people living with brain injuries, Kundalini Yoga, and Yoga as a tool for managing different mood states.

Caregivers are at high risk for stress-related conditions such as high blood pressure, anxiety and depression. Specific styles of yoga can help to reduce stress and lower blood pressure through steady movement, breath practices, and restorative postures. As a trained Hatha yoga teacher, Tamasin can help assist caregivers and clients in ways to incorporate mindfulness, meditation, and yoga practices that feel accessible in daily routines, and contribute to a greater overall sense of peace and wellbeing. Tamasin uses these adaptable practices as a tool in helping to manage the physical and mental stressors of every day life in a care partnership.
